Issues: Water Resources
I believe water is central to responsible land use and economic development in Nevada. During modern times, we Nevadans have held the reins on ground water issues in our state. I believe we must maintain and safeguard our control over the administration, use, and supply of this life-sustaining resource. It is essential to our economic, societal, and environmental future. Congress has made several attempts to usurp Nevadans’ authority of our natural resource. We must remain strong against an ever-expanding regulatory environment at the federal level that is intended to restrict access to and use of our water. We do not need the federal government’s “help” with our water policy. Our legislature enacted, and our state engineer implements, Nevada’s water policy. It is our only check against the federal government’s Goliath-sized ownership of so much of our state’s land—eighty-six percent. I will never support, and will vigorously oppose, any and all attempts to erode Nevada’s authority, and our state engineer’s authority, over the appropriation and use of Nevada’s precious water.
